What keeps working offline?
It depends on where you're using Nibit.
In the web app, the pages you've already opened in that tab. You can read and edit them, and the save indicator shows that you're offline. There's no offline mode to switch on, and none to rely on either: if you reload the page while offline, the app won't load.
In the Mac and Windows apps, every page you own that you've opened on that computer, apart from pages you've shared for others to edit. Each one is saved on the device as you open it, so it's there offline, after closing the app, and after a restart. The app itself starts without a connection, with your notebooks in the sidebar. A page you've never opened on that computer isn't stored there, so it can't be opened until you're back online.
What needs a connection?
- Search. It runs on the server.
- Every AI feature. Generating notes, Polish, flashcards, quizzes, Ask your notes, transcription, podcasts and the study planner all call a model.
- Pages you haven't opened yet on that device or in that tab.
- Shared pages, in the desktop app. Pages shared with you, and your own pages that others can edit, aren't stored on your computer, so they need a connection to open.
What happens to my edits?
In the web app, edits made offline live in the tab's memory until they sync. When the connection comes back, Nibit saves them to your account. If you try to close the tab or log out before they've synced, Nibit warns you first, because closing it then would lose them.
In the desktop apps, offline edits are saved on your computer as you type, so they survive closing the app. They're sent to your account when you reconnect.
What if I edit the same page on two devices?
Nibit never quietly picks a winner.
On your own pages, when an offline device reconnects and finds the page was changed somewhere else in the meantime, it asks you which to keep:
- Keep both, the default. Your account keeps the online version, and this device's version is saved to Recovered notes.
- Use this device's version. The online version is saved to the page's history first, so nothing is lost.
- Decide later.
If the page was deleted while you were offline, your offline edits are saved to Recovered notes.
On pages shared for editing, everyone edits one live copy. If your connection drops, Nibit shows that it's reconnecting and holds your changes, then merges them with everyone else's when you're back. If it can't reconnect, the page turns read-only until it can.
Does it sync across devices?
Yes. Your account carries your notebooks, settings and preferences across operating systems, browsers and devices. Write on a laptop in the lecture, and the page is there in your phone's browser on the way home.
