What is Ask Nibit?
Ask Nibit is the chat built into Nibit that answers from your own notes. It searches your pages by keyword and by meaning, writes an answer, and lists the pages it used underneath. When your notes don't cover something, it can still answer from general knowledge, and it says so in the sentence. It only answers questions about subjects your notes cover, so it stays on what you're studying.
Step 1: Open Ask Nibit from anywhere
You never have to leave what you're doing:
| Where you are | How to open it |
|---|---|
| Any screen, on a computer | The orb on the right edge of the window. Hover over it to type a quick question. |
| Any screen, with the keyboard | Set your own shortcut in Settings, under Shortcuts, "Open Ask Nibit AI". ⌘J is suggested. |
| Writing a note | Type /Ask Nibit in the page |
| On a phone | The Ask AI button in the bottom bar |
| The Chat section | The pinned Ask Nibit AI conversation |
| A wrong quiz answer in a study plan | Explain, which asks why you got it wrong and gives you a similar question to try |
On a computer you can dock the chat to the side of the window, so it sits next to your notes while you work.
Step 2: Point it at the right notes
Type @ and pick a notebook, a chapter or a page. "@Thermodynamics why does entropy increase?" asks only about that notebook, which keeps the answer on topic when the same word means different things in two subjects. Type @here for the note you have open. On a computer you can also drag notebooks, chapters or pages from the sidebar onto the chat.
If you'd rather the note you're looking at always come along, turn on "Attach the note you have open" in Settings, under Ask Nibit.
Step 3: Ask about a passage while you read it
This is the fastest way to understand something without losing your place.
- Highlight the sentence or paragraph you're stuck on, in a note or in a PDF.
- Press Ask in the bubble that appears, or right-click and choose Explain or Ask a Question.
- Type your question, or press Enter with the box empty to have the passage explained.
The answer appears in a card next to the passage, with the passage quoted at the top, and the page stays exactly where it was. Press Ask a follow-up to carry the conversation into the full chat. In a PDF, Explain page explains the whole page you're on.
Step 4: Check where the answer came from
Every answer drawn from your notes lists its sources under it, by notebook, chapter and page. Click a source chip and Nibit opens that page and scrolls to the passage it used, so checking an answer takes one click.
Anything that comes from general knowledge rather than your notes is marked as such in the sentence and has no source chip. If a fact matters for an exam, check it against a page that's cited.
Step 5: Ask better questions
Answers are only as useful as the question. These work well:
- "Explain this like I've never seen it before." Good for a passage you've reread three times.
- "What's the difference between X and Y?" Comparisons are where notes are usually weakest.
- "What am I missing from this chapter?" Shows gaps between your notes and the topic.
- "Quiz me on this note." Nibit asks you questions right in the chat.
- "Summarize my most recent notes." A quick catch-up before class.
Follow-up questions understand what you asked before, so "and why does that matter?" works.
Step 6: Turn the answer into study material
Ask for it in words: "make flashcards from this", "make a quiz from these notes", "turn this into notes" or "make a podcast about this". Nibit replies with a card where you set the details first, such as the number of questions or cards and the difficulty, then press Create. Nothing is made until you do. Quizzes can also run right in the chat with Ask me here instead.
To keep an answer, press Add to your notes and Nibit adds it to the most relevant page as a quoted block with its sources.
Can I talk to it instead of typing?
Yes, in two ways. Press the microphone to dictate a question, then send it. Or, with the box empty, press Start voice chat for a spoken back-and-forth: ask out loud, pause, and Nibit answers out loud in your Read Aloud voice. Tap the orb to interrupt it, and press End when you're done. Spoken turns are saved in the conversation with their sources, like typed ones.
Questions people ask
Is Ask Nibit free?
Yes, with limits. The free plan includes five questions and quick assists a week, shared with asking about a passage and the daily quick check. Making a quiz, flashcards or notes from the chat uses that tool's own weekly allowance, adding an answer to your notes uses the weekly Polish allowance, and podcasts are part of Pro. Pro has no weekly limits. Voice chat also uses recording and Read Aloud minutes on the free plan.
Are my conversations saved?
Yes. Every conversation, including questions asked about a passage, is saved in Chat history, where you can search inside all of them or delete one.
Can Ask Nibit read notebooks shared with me?
No. It only reads notebooks you own.
Are my notes used to train AI?
No. Nothing you put in Nibit or send through its AI features is used to train Nibit's or OpenAI's models. The Privacy Policy has the details.
What's the difference between Ask Nibit and search?
Search finds pages: press ⌘K on a Mac or Ctrl K on Windows. Ask Nibit reads those pages for you and writes the answer, with the pages it used listed underneath. See Ask your notes for the feature in full.
